Toren Consulting Ltd is a security design consultancy for the built environment, founded in London in 2017. Unlike similar teams in multi-disciplinary practices, our experience, processes and tools are all specific to security design: our appointments are expert-led, with no bait-and-switch, and the senior consultants named in your proposal are the ones who deliver the work.
We are consultants only. We do not sell, install or maintain security systems, so when we recommend something, it is because the project needs it.

Awards
Winner, Consultancy Project of the Year at the British Security Awards 2026, for our Shared Workspace Security Guidance, published by the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) for the providers and users of co-working and shared workspaces. The same year brought finalist places in Innovative Project of the Year and National Partnership; we were also finalists for Security Consultancy of the Year at the Security and Fire Excellence Awards in 2018, 2019 and 2025.
We created and administer Proctor, the security rating scheme recognised by BRE as a route to the BREEAM exemplary security credit.

Mark Tucknutt
Director
Directs security strategy and design across the practice's appointments. He founded Toren in 2017 after two decades spanning Home Office security research, security for royal and ministerial residences, and senior consultancy with Control Risks, Intelligent Risks and QCIC. Everything the practice issues crosses his desk before it reaches a client.

Caroline Barr
Director
Runs the business of the consultancy: operations, resourcing, quality and client care across a portfolio of multi-year appointments. She studied physics with business studies, then worked in publishing before retraining as a teacher and rising to Head of Early Years; she co-founded Toren in 2017, and when a project team stays stable from Stage 3 to handover, that is her doing.

Gareth Hulmes
Risk and Strategy Lead
Leads risk and strategy work, typically RIBA Stages 1 to 3, from our Manchester office. Trained first in architecture, he came to security through Greater Manchester Police's Design for Security service, then BRE, where he authored the original BREEAM security credit and led the SABRE scheme. Having sat on both sides of those tables, he tends to know what a reviewer needs before they ask.

Anthony Goodacre
Design and Engineering Lead
Leads design and engineering work, typically RIBA Stages 3 to 6, on the practice's most technically demanding projects. He came to consultancy from a decade of electronic security delivery, project managing and commissioning major installations, so his specifications are grounded in how systems actually perform on site.

Practice Manager
Runs the day to day of the practice: programmes, project set-up, appointments and the coordination between them; the reason reports arrive when we said they would. Before Toren she managed design review on airport and energy projects in Abu Dhabi, after a degree in architectural engineering.

Solomon Arouna
Junior Consultant
Supports the senior team on live assessment and design projects: site surveys, drawings, requirement trackers and report production. He joined Toren after degrees in evolutionary anthropology and palaeoanthropology, training in reconstructing a whole picture from partial evidence, which is most of what a good site survey is.

Claudia Parsons-Young
Junior Consultant
Supports risk assessments, Security Needs Assessments and certification work, from first site survey to issued report. She came to Toren from PwC Strategy& in Australia after three years as a public sector strategy consultant, and is qualified in Designing Out Crime to the same Level 5 standard the police require of their own Designing Out Crime Officers.

How we work
Three habits we hold ourselves to
People first
Buildings exist for the people in them, and so does security. We design for the resident, the receptionist and the visitor before the technology.
Collaboration
Security only works when it is coordinated: with the architect, the MEP engineer, the QS and the operator. We turn up to the design team as members, not reviewers.
Ownership
One consultancy accountable for the security workstream from planning to handover. If it is in our scope, it is our problem until it is closed.
The team on this page is the whole practice. A standalone Crime Impact Statement gets the same senior attention as a five-year design appointment, because there is no second team to pass the smaller work to.
