Security design consultants for the built environment
Poorly designed security costs you time, money and the goodwill of users.
A missed BREEAM credit. A planning objection from the police consultee. A contractor variation because the security package was ambiguous. These are avoidable, but only if security is somebody's whole job. It is ours: we do security for the built environment, and nothing else.
Recognition
Winner, Consultancy Project of the Year
British Security Awards 2026, for our Shared Workspace Security Guidance. We were finalists in two further categories the same year, and previously for Security Consultancy of the Year at the Security and Fire Excellence Awards in 2018, 2019 and 2025.
We work across all sectors of the built environment, for clients including:
Services
Whatever security your project needs, it lands here
Most projects come to us needing one of these four things. They are designed to work together, because on a real project they are one thread.
Security Design & Specification
Full security consultancy from strategy to handover, covering whichever of RIBA Stages 1 to 6 your project needs: risk assessment, physical and electronic security design and specification, BIM authoring, construction assurance and witness testing. We design for buildability, drawing on hands-on experience of what actually works once it's built.
BREEAM Security Needs Assessments
A Security Needs Assessment (SNA) by a Suitably Qualified Security Specialist (SQSS). We visit the site, consult the design team, and set out recommendations that reflect your project's priorities and constraints, so your BREEAM Assessor can award the BREEAM security credit. See Proctor, below, for the BREEAM exemplary credit alongside it, under one appointment.
Crime Impact Statements
Planning support that answers local policy directly. We write Crime Impact Statements and Assessments; the security section of your Design and Access Statement (DAS) then simply refers to it. A Secured by Design (SBD) Licensed Consultant leads the work. Where local validation calls for it, we consult the police Designing Out Crime Officer (DOCO).
Secured by Design support
Scoping, coordination and condition discharge for SBD, from requirement trackers to DOCO liaison and inspection support. Certification is awarded by the police; we employ an SBD Licensed Consultant to make sure your project is ready for it.
Proctor
One appointment. Two BREEAM credits.
Toren Consulting Ltd created and administers Proctor, a security rating scheme recognised by BRE as a route to the exemplary security credit under BREEAM Refurbishment V7. We are currently the only consultancy able to deliver the SNA, the continuing specialist role and the Proctor assessment under a single appointment.
What clients say
"Working with Toren has been a genuinely positive experience across our portfolio of projects – the team is dependable, user-friendly, pragmatic. I have enjoyed our working relationship – the Toren Team bring real expertise and professionalism to what can be a complex process. The kind of consultancy you don't always think to thank, but absolutely should."
"I have noted the applicant's detailed and comprehensive Crime Impact Statement and agree fully with its findings. The document provides a strong foundation on which to implement security for this new building."
Getting started is simple
1. Tell us about your project
Where it is and what it needs: planning input, the BREEAM security credits, design and specification or discharge of a condition.
2. Get a fixed-fee proposal
We start with a short call to understand what your project needs, then reply quickly with a fixed fee wherever the scope allows, so you know the cost before you commit.
3. We deliver
The same senior leads stay on your project throughout: our risk and strategy lead carries it through the early stages, our design and engineering lead takes it from design to handover. You are kept to the fee we quoted.
